Potbelly Pigs in the Winter

Potbelly pigs do not enjoy the winter months. Some potbellies can become very depressed. They sleep a lot more in the winter. Potbelly Pigs can become very bored also. They are used to going out in the yard and lay in the sun and graze.
So if you have Potbelly Pig Pets indoors you may want to find some activities for them to do. Potbelly Pigs love to play.
Sometimes in the winter I have problems with one of my potbellies getting constipated. This is because she is not grazing.
If you have this problem here are a few suggestions- Add one tablespoon of vegetable oil or mineral oil to their food once a day.
Also, make sure your potbelly is drinking plenty of water. You can mix their food with lots of water, they seem to do pretty well with it.
Just make sure your potbelly pig gets plenty of excercise in the colder months, and you should have a happy, healthy piggie!

How to Feed Your Potbelly Pig

Feeding yourPot Belly is the most important information you need. This is where most people go wrong. Potbellies can become very obese and that can happen very fast. Your potbelly should only be fed potbelly pig food or mini pig food. You can also feed them a small amount of fresh veggies like, lettuce, carrots, celery, cucumbers and brocoli.

Adult pot belly pigs should only get about 2/3 of a cup a day. Plus some veggies. Potbellies also need grass to graze in the summer. They need lots of fresh water at all times. This is very important. Some potbelly pigs will not drink enough. If this is the case you can add water to their pig food. They seem to do fine with it.

Potbelly Pigs with dogs or children

Pot bellied pigs can easily get along great with your dog. I have 8 small breed dogs living in my house with my potbellies. There is just one rule you must remember-NEVER leave your dogs and potbelly pig alone together. Even if they get along fine, you should never leave them. If something would happen while you are away and your potbelly squeals for some reason, the dogs first instinct is to attack!!
I have read horror stories about people coming home to find their potbelly pig dead or badly injured by the dog. So you must separate them when you leave. Other than that dogs and potbellies can get along great!

Okay, now with the children.....my advice would be not to get a pot belly if you have small children. Potbellies are very territorial and they like to dominate. They could feel threatened by a small child and maybe bite them to show them who is boss. My son is 13 and we have no problems at all. So you may want to wait until your child is little older to buy a potbelly pig.

Pot Belly Pig Skin Care

Vietnamese Potbelly pigs have very dry skin. There are many products out there for their skin. I use Avon's Skin so Soft on my potbellies. It works great, plus makes them smell good. Pot belly Pigs do not have an odor. Their dry skin makes them very itchy. You will find them rubbing up against your furniture to scratch themselves. They love being brushed. They will lay there all night if you use a soft bristle brush or comb on them. You can also bathe your potbelly if you prefer.

Potbelly Pigs shed just like a dog would. They lose a lot of hair in the spring and grow it back before winter.
Potbellies can get sunburned. They love laying in the sun in the summertime. I always put sunblock on Pickle. Poptart never burns. I think the lighter skin potbellies burn easier.

Adopting a Potbelly Pig

Hello my name is Daye Carpenter and I would love to share some info with you about Potbelly Pigs.

I own two wonderful little pigs ,although I guess you can't call them little! I have a pig named Poptart who is 3 years old and my other pig is Pickle who is 2 years old. They both live in the house with me.

I would just like to let people know potbellies are alot of work. So many people buy these cute little pigs and when they grow up they do not want them anymore. There are so many potbelly pig rescues loaded with pigs that people just throw away.

Here are the reasons why: Alot of breeders will lie and tell people they will not get to be very big at all. There is no such thing as a teacup pig or micro pig! There are smaller pigs but at full mature growth they still get to be the size of a medium dog. Potbellies will get huge if you do not feed them the proper way. A normal pig will weigh anywhere from 60lbs to 150lbs. So when these pigs grow up and are not cute anymore owners give them up. They must be on a strict diet of Potbelly pig food and fresh veggies.

Next reason: Alot of people do not have time to train their pig. Pigs are very smart. They can be trained very easily with patience and time.

Both of my pigs are trained to go outside to potty through my doggie door. Pot bellied Pigs can be trained to use a litter box but that can get pretty messy. Pigs learn words very fast. In my opinion they are easier to train than a dog. They will do anything for food!

Here are a couple of other reasons: The health care of your pig. It is hard to find a vet who will treat potbellies. They need vaccines . They need their hooves trimmed on a regular basis. Most people can learn to do that at home. They need to be spayed when they are young. They need a nice yard to graze in. Potbelly Pigs can not walk on stairs,so you may have to use ramps for them. My husband built a ramp for our pigs off of our deck to go out into the yard.

So there are many reasons to consider before adopting a potbelly. They are not for everyone.

Please just do all the research you can before adopting one. If a potbelly is for you, you will have so much fun!!They make great pets and they are very lovable. They get very attatched to their owners.

I love my pigs!!!
